Heat pump vs. gas tank water heater

Two different fuels, two different strengths. The right answer depends on your utility rates, your space and how much conversion work your house needs.

A heat pump may make sense when

  • You want to move away from on-site combustion
  • There’s suitable space with air volume and a drain
  • Your panel can support a circuit, or a 120V model fits your demand
  • You’re electrifying other appliances

Gas tank may make sense when

  • You want the simplest like-for-like replacement
  • Fast recovery matters for a large household
  • The space can’t meet heat pump air or drainage needs
  • Local gas rates make it the better operating-cost choice for you

Installation

Installation considerations

A gas-to-heat-pump conversion involves several trades: electrical, gas line capping, vent evaluation for any remaining gas appliance, and condensate drainage. None should be attempted as DIY.
