Compare / Heat pump vs. tankless
Heat pump vs. tankless water heater
Stored hot water made efficiently, or hot water made on demand. Each fits a different kind of house.
| Consideration | Heat pump (hybrid) | Tankless |
|---|---|---|
| Energy source | Electric | Gas or electric |
| Delivery | Stored; can run short in a long peak | Continuous, limited by flow rate |
| Space | Floor space and air volume | Small, wall-mounted |
| Utilities | 240V or 120V; condensate drain | Gas: line sizing and venting. Electric: very large circuits |
| Maintenance | Filter, condensate line, tank | Periodic descaling |
| Standby losses | Some, from the tank | None |
A heat pump may make sense when
- You have basement or utility space
- You want efficient electric water heating
- Your electrical service can’t support whole-home electric tankless
Tankless may make sense when
- Floor space is scarce
- You have adequate gas service and venting
- Continuous hot water matters most
Installation
Installation considerations
Moving from tankless to a heat pump means finding floor space and drainage. Moving to tankless may require upsizing a gas line or major electrical capacity.
