Replacement / Three situations

What you’re replacing shapes the whole project

The same new water heater can be a straightforward swap in one house and a multi-trade conversion in the next. Start with what you have now.

01Simplest

Replacing an existing heat pump water heater

The location has already proven workable, the circuit and condensate route exist, and you know how the unit behaves. The main questions are whether the new model’s dimensions, clearances and electrical specification match, and whether your household’s demand has changed.

Worth revisiting: was the old unit running in electric mode often? That can signal undersizing or a space that runs cold.

02Common

Replacing a standard electric tank

Often the most direct conversion: there is usually a 240V circuit at the location already. The new considerations are space and air volume, a taller unit, condensate drainage (electric tanks don’t make any), and sound and cooling in the surrounding room.

If the old tank sits in a small closet, the manufacturer’s requirements for air may rule out that exact spot or require louvered doors or ducting.

03Most involved

Replacing a gas tank

A gas-to-heat-pump conversion typically adds a new electrical circuit, capping the gas line, and evaluating shared venting for any remaining gas appliance — plus condensate drainage. Each step requires qualified professionals.
