Sizing / First-hour rating
Why tank gallons alone won’t size your water heater
The number that matters is how much hot water your home uses in its busiest hour — and whether the heater can deliver it.
01Definitions
Four terms worth knowing
- Tank capacity
- Gallons stored. Hybrids commonly come in about 50, 65 and 80 gallons.
- First-hour rating
- Gallons of hot water delivered in an hour from a full tank. On the EnergyGuide label.
- Recovery
- How fast the heater reheats. Slower in heat-pump-only mode.
- Simultaneous demand
- Two showers and a washer at once — the real stress test.
02Your peak hour
Think about your busiest hour
DOE suggests estimating your household’s peak-hour demand and choosing a heater whose first-hour rating meets it. Consider showers and baths, laundry, the dishwasher and kitchen use — and how many overlap.
- How many showers happen back to back in the morning?
- Is there a large soaking tub?
- Is laundry done with hot water during peak times?
- Do guests regularly increase demand?

Household patterns and commonly considered sizes
| Consideration | Pattern | Often considered | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people | Staggered use | ~50 gal | Low peak demand |
| 3–4 people | Back-to-back showers | ~65 gal | Buffers slower recovery |
| 5+ people | Overlapping showers, frequent laundry | ~80 gal | Long, heavy peak hour |
These aren’t recommendations for your home. Compare first-hour ratings for specific models in the mode you expect to use.
03Modes
Operating modes change the math
Heat-pump-only mode maximizes efficiency with slower recovery. Hybrid and high-demand modes use the resistance elements to keep up. Some households pick a larger tank so they can stay in an efficient mode most of the year.
