Heat Pump Water Heater Noise: What Homeowners Should Expect
By Cincy Heat Pump Water Heaters Editorial Team · Sources last reviewed October 2026
5 min readExpect a steady hum from the fan and compressor while the heat pump runs — often compared to a dehumidifier. In a basement or utility room it usually goes unnoticed; next to a bedroom, it may not.
Where the sound comes from
Two components make noise: the fan moving air across the coil and the compressor. Both run only during heating cycles, which can last a while after heavy hot-water use. A conventional tank, by contrast, is nearly silent.
Placement matters most
- Unfinished basements and garages rarely raise concerns.
- Utility rooms sharing a wall with bedrooms, offices or media rooms deserve thought.
- Closet installations put the unit close to living space and often involve louvered doors that let sound through.
- Hard surfaces reflect sound; mounting on a solid, level surface reduces vibration.
Reading manufacturer specs
Many manufacturers publish a sound rating in decibels (dBA) in their specification sheets. Ratings are measured under specific test conditions, so compare like with like and treat them as a guide rather than a guarantee of what you’ll hear in your home.
Operating modes
Electric-only modes are quiet but give up efficiency. Some units allow scheduling, which can shift run time away from hours when quiet matters.
