Do Heat Pump Water Heaters Need a 240V Circuit?

6 min readMany heat pump water heaters are designed for a dedicated 240V circuit — but not all. Electrical requirements vary by model and configuration, and a growing category of 120V units is designed for homes where adding a 240V circuit is difficult.
Why most hybrids use 240V
The heat pump itself draws relatively little power. The 240V requirement mostly comes from the backup resistance elements, which need more power to heat water quickly in hybrid or electric modes. This is the same type of circuit a conventional electric tank uses.
120V models
Several manufacturers offer 120V heat pump water heaters. Some plug into a standard outlet (in some cases a dedicated outlet, or one shared under specific conditions per the manufacturer). Because they lack — or limit — high-power resistance backup, they generally recover more slowly, and are often sized larger to compensate.
What decides your situation
- The specific model’s electrical specification in its installation manual
- Whether a 240V circuit already exists at the location (common when replacing an electric tank)
- Panel capacity and available breaker spaces
- Distance from the panel to the installation location
- Local code and permit requirements
| Consideration | 240V hybrid | 120V heat pump |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit | Dedicated 240V, per manual | 120V; outlet requirements per manual |
| Recovery | Faster with element assist | Slower; relies on heat pump |
| Fits best | Electric tank replacements; homes with panel capacity | Gas replacements where new 240V is impractical |
