50, 65, or 80 Gallons? How to Size a Heat Pump Water Heater

8 min readSize a heat pump water heater by its first-hour rating and your household’s busiest hour — not by tank gallons alone. Because heat pump recovery is slower than gas or resistance heating, many homes choose a larger tank than the one they’re replacing.
Tank capacity
Residential hybrid units are commonly offered around 50, 65 and 80 gallons. A larger tank stores more hot water ready for use, and gives the heat pump more time to keep up efficiently.
First-hour rating
The first-hour rating (FHR) estimates how many gallons of hot water the heater can supply in one hour, starting with a full tank. It appears on the EnergyGuide label. DOE recommends matching FHR to your household’s peak-hour demand. Note that a model’s FHR can differ by operating mode.
Recovery
Recovery is how quickly the heater reheats water after use. In heat-pump-only modes, recovery is slower; hybrid modes can bring in the resistance elements to speed it up, at the cost of efficiency.
Estimating your peak hour
DOE’s approach: think about the busiest hour in your home and add up the hot water used. Typical uses include showers, a dishwasher, laundry and kitchen sinks. Simultaneous use — two showers while the washer runs — is what stresses a tank.
Illustrative households
These are general illustrations, not recommendations for your home.
| Consideration | Household pattern | Often considered | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people | Staggered showers, modest laundry | ~50 gal | Peak demand is low |
| 3–4 people | Back-to-back morning showers | ~65 gal | Buffers slower recovery |
| 4–5+ people | Overlapping showers, soaking tub, frequent laundry | ~80 gal | Peak hour is long and heavy |
Operating modes
Most units offer modes such as heat pump only, hybrid/energy saver, and electric/high demand, plus vacation. A household that occasionally runs short might use high-demand mode during guest visits rather than oversizing year-round.
